It might just be wishful thinking or perhaps there's some truth to it. Either way, Bruce Irvin likes what he sees from the Carolina Panthers' defensive front.

Irvin, of course, knows what a great defense looks like. He was part of the Seahawks team that won Super Bowl XLVIII on the back of an overwhelming defense. That defense included a front seven that made life tough on opposing quarterbacks, which was not the case for the Panthers' defense in 2018.

Irvin believes things will be different this season. He said the Panthers defense “kind of compares” to the one that Seattle employed that season.

“That team went eight deep up front,” Irvin said, via the Charlotte Observer. “We had four really good guys, and then four more went in and there was no drop-off. So that’s kind of the feeling I’m getting here. We had a lot of dudes. Everybody communicated. That’s the kind of vibe it is here.”

Irvin was referring to one of the great NFL defenses of the past decade — the 2013 Seattle Seahawks. That Seahawks D – nicknamed the “Legion of Boom” — eviscerated Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, 43-8, in the Super Bowl that season while finishing No. 1 in the NFL in points allowed, yards allowed, and takeaways.

The Panthers have taken steps to bolster their front seven this offseason, including the addition of former Buccaneers lineman Gerald McCoy and first-round pick Brian Burns.

With other young players like linebacker Shaq Thompson looking to take a leap froward, the front will look to improve upon a 27th-place finish in sacks last season.
