Cam Newton returned to the Carolina Panthers last season after he was released by the New England Patriots, but now he's a free agent seeking a new contract. Newton just addressed his free agency with ESPN's Adam Schefter, who says the veteran quarterback is drawing interest:

“I have teams that are interested in signing me,” Newton texted Schefter. “I am waiting on the best fit as it pertains to winning a championship and getting a fair chance to play.”

ESPN's David Newton says the Panthers are open to Newton returning, “but it would have to be the right fit and Newton would have to understand his role.” It's unclear just how much interest Newton has in returning to Carolina.

The Panthers don't look much like a Super Bowl contender and have spent this offseason trying to find an upgrade at quarterback. Perhaps the two sides are able to come to an agreement at some point now that much of the quarterback market has dried up, but Newton is remaining patient and trying to find the right fit for him.

The 32-year-old appeared in eight games for Carolina last season, starting five of them. He didn't win a single one of those five starts and put up awful passing numbers, completing just 54.8% of his passes for 684 yards, four touchdowns, five interceptions and a 64.4 quarterback rating. He did have 47 carries for 230 yards and five touchdowns.

In reality, Newton is nothing more than a backup at this point because of his passing struggles, though he definitely should have a spot in the NFL as a backup. We'll just have to wait and see where he winds up.
