Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is still wearing a walking boot as he deals with a mid-foot sprain, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
#Panthers QB Cam Newton is still in a walking boot today as he battles a re-aggravation of his mid-foot sprain, source says. The team will know more about his status soon. If he can practice, he’s got a shot at Sunday. If he doesn’t practice, it’s unlikely he plays.

Newton wearing the walking boot doesn't rule him out for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, but if he can't practice on Wednesday, it's hard to imagine he will play.
Newton originally suffered the sprain during the preseason and told the team he had re-aggravated after the team's loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If Newton can't go the team will be turning to undrafted second-year quarterback Kyle Allen. Panthers coach Ron Rivera was impressed with what he saw last year with Allen, and he thinks he is ready to step in if he needs to.
“I think Kyle’s more than ready,” Rivera said via the Charlotte Observer. “Kyle did some really good things last year, showed us what he’s capable of. He had a good preseason. Had a whole bunch of ups, had a few downs … He knows the offense. He knows it very well, so we feel confident about him.
“… I just think at times as you watch him, he needs to speed himself up a little bit. Because one thing he will have to get used to obviously is the speed of the game. I mean, he’s only played in limited situations, so things are a lot faster. I think he’s got the ability, so it’ll be fun to watch him.”
Newton still gives the team the best chance to win if he is healthy, but it's clear the team has faith Allen can step in and give the team a good chance to win too.
