Deshaun Watson took a big step towards returning to the NFL on Friday. It was decided by a grand jury that the Houston Texans quarterback facing no criminal charges over his sexual assault scandal. Despite the immense baggage he carries, including 22 civil lawsuits that have yet to be decided, teams like the Carolina Panthers are looking to trade for him.
Rival teams were waiting on the criminal case to be settled before pursuing the 26-year-old Pro Bowler. Watson has a no-trade clause, so he is able to decide among the teams that pursue him where he wants to go. The Panthers are among several teams interested in him. The Seattle Seahawks are another one, as they need to find a replacement for Russell Wilson.
According to ESPN's David Newton, the Panthers are going to make an “aggressive” offer once Watson waives his no-trade clause. He explained what the Texans' asking price is and where Carolina stands on it.
The Texans reportedly have asked for three first-round picks, other draft picks and at least one player for Watson. The Panthers are prepared to make a pitch they don't believe will mortgage the future, the source said.
The only untradable player for Carolina appears to be safety Jeremy Chinn, who is entering his third year.
Carolina's quarterback needs are among the direst in the league. The trade market for Watson, who could receive a suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, is expected to ramp up quickly and the Panthers are positioned to bring him in.
