Former first-round running back Jonathan Stewart signed with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, but he won't be seeing the field alongside Christian McCaffrey.

Stewart, the leading rusher in franchise history, signed a one-day contract with the Panthers in order to retire with the team that brought him into the league more than a decade ago:

The Panthers selected Stewart with the 13th pick of the 2008 draft, and he spent the first 10 years of his career in Carolina. Stewart moved on to the New York Giants last year, but wound up on injured reserve after rushing six times for 17 yards in three games.

Stewart's best years came in Carolina, where he spent a bulk of his time sharing the backfield with former star DeAngelo Williams. He ran 1,699 times for 7,318 yards and 51 touchdowns while catching 162 passes for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns. He added five more touchdown runs in the postseason, including three scores as the team made the Super Bowl after the 2015 regular season.

From 2008-18, his career total of 7,335 yards ranked eighth in the NFL.

After Stewart rushed for 836 yards as a rookie, the bruising back piled up 1,133 rushing yards in 2009 and scored 10 rushing touchdowns for the second consecutive year. Paired with Williams’ 1,117 yards, the dynamic duo became the first teammates in NFL history to both top 1,100 rushing yards in the same season. Stewart earned a Pro Bowl nod that year.
Stewart passed Williams for the franchise’s all-time rushing mark in 2017 during a Week 4 victory at the New England Patriots.
