On Tuesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport exclaimed that the Carolina Panthers are prepared to have Cam Newton as their starting quarterback in 2020. One of the reasons why the Panthers have had a change of heart is due to Matt Rhule being encouraged with Newton's rehab process.

Earlier this month, Panthers owner David Tepper made comments that suggested that Carolina could be moving on from Newton. However, the veteran signal-caller seems to have made enough progress for them to be comfortable keeping him on the roster.

The 2019 season was another year riddled with injury for the former MVP quarterback. In his first game of the preseason, Newton sustained a foot injury. Following the injury, he would attempt to make a return in Week 1 of the regular season.

Despite his efforts, Newton would reaggravate the injury and would be sidelined for the rest of the season. In just the past two seasons, Newton has undergone two surgeries to his shoulder and foot.

His latest surgery for his Lisfranc injury is expected to keep him sidelined until March. On the other hand, he's had nearly a year to recover from the shoulder injury that he got last January.

Next season, Newton is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is a cap hit of $21.1 million. Due to the uncertainty of his future, there was much speculation on what the Panthers could do with Newton.

For the time being, Rhule appears to be confident in Newton as his starting quarterback in his first season as head coach. Nevertheless, there is plenty of time for the Panthers to change their minds.
