The San Francisco 49ers have the New England Patriots to thank for trading them their new franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo. But according to Niners GM John Lynch, they also took a stab at getting the other Patriots QB, Tom Brady.

In an interview with the Pardon My Take podcast, Lynch admits that when he called the Patriots’ Bill Belichick about Jimmy G, he decided to shoot his shot with Brady. Belichick reacted appropriately enough.

“Yeah, we were calling about Jimmy. And we did have that conversation and got quickly rebuffed. And I figured, what the heck, you gotta take your shot, right? You can’t score if you don’t shoot. So I had to summon up the courage and Bill laughed at me … and basically hung up on me. But hey, I took my shot.”

It was a bold move by Lynch to bring up the possibility of a Brady trade, even though there was pretty much little to no chance that Belichick would ever sign off on it. Although, if there was one team Brady might have considered moving to, it was the Niners, whom he supported as a kid.

But while they didn’t land the Brady, Lynch and the 49ers are obviously happy about getting Garoppolo. Jimmy G may not be the G.O.A.T., but he is the much younger QB who could end up having a great career in his own right with San Francisco.

As for Belichick and Brady, while they may not have the rosiest relationship these days, they should still be Super Bowl contenders as long as Brady remains healthy.
