The New England Patriots made a potentially big-splash trade on Monday afternoon with the trade for star wide receiver Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round pick.

Head coach Bill Belichick has chimed in on the situation stating that the team will operate moving forward with Gordon with what he can handle in the next several days that will determine his availability for Sunday's game on the road against the Detroit Lions, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

“We’re at the same place with him that we were yesterday, so we’re in the process of working through it,” Belichick said. “We’ll just have to see how it goes.”

The Patriots have made the move in hopes that Gordon can provide some significant help their passing game that has notably struggled over the first couple of weeks of the season. These issues had become apparent against the Jacksonville Jaguars with Chris Hogan being the only effective option at the wide receiver position with three catches for 42 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown. The absence of Julian Edelman due to a four-game suspension to begin the year has had a huge impact on their passing game.

Gordon has shown throughout his career when has been able to take the field that he can be a major threat in the passing game. He has the ability to make plays down the field while stepping as a legitimate No.1 receiving option that an offense can lean on effective on a weekly basis to carry the workload. This is something that the Patriots are lacking with their only true threat being Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Belichick realizes that it will take some time for Gordon to pick up the offense, but the team now possesses a highly talented wideout that could help them push toward competing for yet another Super Bowl as a key piece to the offensive game plan.
