Cam Newton appears to be sending a message to the New England Patriots amid his quarterback battle with rookie Mac Jones.
On Instagram, Newton made a couple of posts about his situation in New England and all the criticisms he has received. One of the posts, however, seems to be directed at the Patriots since the veteran quarterback emphasized “loyalty.”
“I’m far from perfect…. but loyalty, I deserve it,” Newton wrote.
While it is uncertain what Cam Newton is really pertaining to, it’s hard not to assume that it’s about his ongoing battle for the QB1 spot with Patriots newcomer Mac Jones. After all, the two just shared the field in their preseason opener on Thursday.
In the said game against the Washington Football Team, Newton started the match and went for 49 yards on 4-of-7 pass completion. He was then replaced by Jones, who finished with 89 yards on after connecting on 13 of his 19 passes. The Patriots went on to win the game 22-13.
For what it’s worth, though, Newton previously talked about his QB competition with Jones as well and it didn’t look like he has anything against it. In fact, he embraced it fully and mentioned that it is just part of the Patriots’ way.
“Ever since I’ve been here, there’s been a quarterback competition,” Newton shared at the time. “I think in essence, that’s the underlying Patriot Way. Every position has a competition there, and the quarterback position is no different…Brian Hoyer is supposed to make me better. I’m supposed to make Mac Jones better. Mac Jones is supposed to make Brian Hoyer better. And you can’t forget about (Jake) Dolegala and even (Jarrett Stidham), that’s in the balance…But for us, it’s just the mentality to have that championship mental toughness each and every day, and the desire to get better.”
There is still no decision on who will be the official QB1 of the Patriots when the 2021 season starts, but it sure seems like the battle is heating up.
