One of the more underrated and sneaky, intriguing matchups in Week 1 will feature Mac Jones and the New England Patriots against Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins.
The two were both quarterbacks and teammates at the same time during their Alabama Crimson Tide days and now it will be the rookie Jones and the Patriots taking on the second-year QB1 in Tagovailoa and the Dolphins.
Via the Boston Herald but talked about on WEEI, Jones spoke about the matchup against his former teammate to start his own rookie career.
“Tua’s an awesome guy,” Jones said on WEEI. “He’s really a good, talented football player. Learning from him, and Jalen (Hurts) was great, obviously. Now that we’re all getting a chance here in the NFL, I think it’ll be cool to go up against each other.”
It's amazing to think that Jones, Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts were all on the same roster at one point in time and are now all starting quarterbacks in the NFL for the Patriots, Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively.
Tagovailoa had a shaky rookie season as it was his first time back on the field after his Alabama career was cut short by injury. Jones saw firsthand Tagovailoa's rehab process to get to where he is now.
“I think Tua, obviously, coming off the injury, that can’t be easy,” said Jones. “And being there with him when he was going through rehab, that was obviously hard . . . he’s obviously made a lot of improvements. I’m sure he feels more comfortable. He’s always had talent, and he always will have talent.”
