Cam Newton is a former MVP who was recently released by the Carolina Panthers. The New England Patriots are stunned to see their long-time talisman in Tom Brady leave for the sunny shores of Tampa Bay. Both of these slighted parties are looking to get back on the winning trail, so teaming up is not out of the question.

If the thought of bringing Newton over is already making Patriots fans excited, then the confirmation of an AFC assistant coach would do nothing but whet their appetites. Asked by Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, the anonymous coach believes that the Patriots gunning for Newton before free agency ends is not beyond the realm of possibility.

“I wouldn't be stunned if this happened,” the coach told Freeman.

Why Newton Could Sign With Patriots

The Patriots will want an excellent quarterback to replace Brady. And Newton more than checks all of the important categories on the list. He's a former league MVP who has led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance. He's always been a consistent performer for the Panthers through his nine years, notching 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns. More importantly, he found a new drive after being dismissed by the Panthers. He's the perfect QB for the Patriots.

The Pats would also be a great fit for Newton. Bill Belichick has proven time and time again that he's a winning coach. And his coaching acumen can definitely help Newton get over the hump. While aging, the Patriots still have a top receiving corps led by Julian Edelman. A few key signings should help the Patriots get back on track and into the Super Bowl conversation.

All Newton's camp has to do now is prove to the Patriots that he'll be able to play. Hew was sidelined for much of last year due to injury. His health is one of the reasons why he was let go by the Panthers, and the Patriots don't want to gamble on an injured man.

If he can prove his health, then the Patriots should be more than happy to take him on.
