The New England Patriots suffered a significant blow on Monday after they placed star defensive end Matthew Judon on the COVID-19 list. The move had fans expecting Judon to be sidelined for Week 17's bout against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but that may not be the case after all. Per NESN's Zack Cox, the Patriots are optimistic that Judon will be able to return from the COVID-list in time for Sunday's game.

The Patriots can't afford to drop a game as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot in the AFC, so having Judon on the field will be a huge boost, even against a lowly Jaguars' offense. In addition to Judon, Patriots' linebackers coach Jerod Mayo revealed the team is also hopeful to receive Ja'Whaun Bentley back from the COVID-list, having also seen Bentley enter the league's protocols on Monday.

Judon has been one of the Patriots' best defenders in 2021, recording 57 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 25 QB hits and 12.5 sacks. The 29-year-old was selected to his third Pro Bowl this season, making it three consecutive years he's earned the honors. Judon joined the Patriots in 2021 after spending the first five years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens.

Judon signed a four-year, $56 million deal with the Patriots in the offseason, a move which has clearly paid off for both parties. Judon has cemented himself as one of the league's most feared pass-rushers and has helped make the Patriots' defense one of the league's best. His presence on the field in Week 17 will be of the utmost importance for New England, as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive.
