It wasn't long before Dante Pettis found himself a new home after he was cut by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. The New York Giants successfully claimed Pettis from the waiver wire, which as it turns out, was not the ending the new England Patriots were hoping for.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Patriots were also in the market for Pettis, but unfortunately for them, the Giants held a higher waiver priority over them:

Pettis is in dire need of a fresh start after falling out of favor in San Francisco under coach Kyle Shanahan. The Giants are pretty stacked in the wide receiver department, though, which means that Pettis will still need to work his way up the pecking order. Nonetheless, there's no denying that he's in a much better position now than he was a week ago.

As for the Patriots, this recent turn of events is not exactly a season-altering development. Pettis is a pretty good player, but its not as if missing out on him will lead to catastrophic effects for New England.

Then again, at 2-5, it is clear that the Patriots are not having the best of campaigns thus far. They are in need of some help in a number of areas, and the addition of a guy like Pettis could have provided them with a much-needed boost. There's no point crying over spilled milk at this point, however.

New England will be back in action on Monday against a hapless New York Jets side, and the Patriots should probably be able to log their third win of the season.
