It has been an eventful cutdown day for the New England Patriots. First came the bombshell that veteran quarterback Cam Newton got cut, with rookie Mac Jones winning the starting job. That's not the only big news coming out of New England, as star cornerback Stephon Gilmore has been placed on the physically unable to perform list and will miss at least the first six games of the season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Gilmore has been recovering from quad surgery at the end of last season. There have been plenty of trade rumors surrounding the Patriots cornerback in the past year because of his unhappiness with his contract situation, but he hasn't gone anywhere and now he won't be playing for a while as the 2021 season begins.

The 30-year-old appeared in 11 games in 2020 after two consecutive First-Team All-Pro seasons. Gilmore won Defensive Player of Year in 2019 after leading the NFL with six interceptions and 20 passes defended. Even despite his injury last season, he was named to a third consecutive Pro Bowl.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Stephon Gilmore in New England moving forward. When he returns from this lengthy absence, he'll need to prove he can still play at a high level. The cornerback did receive praise from coaches for how he has handled himself in the building even while rehabbing.

Meanwhile, another player who had been unhappy with his situation with the Patriots has made the roster. That would be wide receiver N'Keal Harry, who previously requested a trade. However, it looks like he'll be with the team for the 2021 season and that things have been smoothed over a bit.

So, yeah, a lot of stuff going on with the Patriots these days. It's going to be quite the season in Foxborough.
