Have you heard this before? New England releases a wide receiver.
On Tuesday, the Patriots released another receiver in Cameron Meredith, according to Field Yates of ESPN. Meredith was on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list as he was recovering from a knee injury, which ultimately hasn't happened.
In August, the Patriots signed Meredith to a two-year deal. That was following a stint with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints signed Meredith to a two-year $9.6 million contract in 2018 and released him in late July due to recurring injuries.
Meredith, 27, is a talented receiver with a troubling injury history. In 2017, as a member of the Chicago Bears, he suffered a severe knee injury in the third week of the preseason that put him out for the entirety of the season. He's played three seasons since 2015.
Meredith has performed when called upon. In 2016, despite starting the season as the Bears' fifth wide receiver, he shined. He quickly became one of their top options, as he finished the season with 66 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns; all three leading the team.
Now a free agent, Meredith will likely wait until he's healthy to find his next team. There could be interest in a 27-year-old boasting a 6-3, 208-pound frame.
With the release of Meredith, the Patriots have six receivers on the active roster: Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman, Phillip Dorsett, Jakobi Meyers, Mathew Slater, and Gunner Olszewski. Rookie first-round selection N'Keal Harry will be able to return later in the season, as the Patriots placed him on injured reserve (not season-ending) after making their cuts in late August.
