The New England Patriots have traded cornerback Duke Dawson to the Denver Broncos, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Dawson, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, was originally selected by the Patriots in the second round (56th pick overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

However, at the beginning of his rookie campaign, Dawson was placed on the injured reserve list due to a hamstring issue. He was activated off of the injured reserve list in November but did not play in a single game.

The 22-year-old spent four seasons at Florida, arriving in 2014. He played only scarcely during his first season, logging 14 tackles, an interception and a defensive touchdown, and during his sophomore year, his role didn't change much, as he finished with just nine tackles.

It was until Dawson's junior campaign that he began to receive more playing time, as he posted 24 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a pick, a forced fumble, seven passes defended and a defensive score that year.

He then had a breakout season of sorts during his senior year, registering 34 tackles, four interceptions, nine passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Patriots are coming off of a 2018 season in which they won 11 games and captured their 10th straight AFC East division title and 15th in the last 16 years overall. They then went on to defeat the Los Angeles Rams for their sixth Super Bowl championship.

New England is favored by many to win its seventh title this year.

The Pats will open up their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 8.
