New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore has a very simple message for the rest of the NFL: He is the Defensive Player of the Year. In an interview with Zolak and Bertrand, Gilmore said his play has spoke for itself, and there is no question he should be taking home the award.

“My play speaks for itself. If you really watch the tape each and every game, there’s no question,” Gilmore said on 98.5 The Sports Hub when asked if he’s the defensive player of the year.

Gilmore has matched up week in and week out with the opposing team's best wide receiver and he has shut them down. He also currently has six interceptions, leading the Patriots and the league.. Gilmore isn't the only one who thinks he deserves to be named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison said on FS1’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” that Gilmore deserved the award.

“I have to give it to Gilmore,” Harrison said via NESN.com. “He is shutting down whole players, whole sides of fields. No question. He’s taking players that are No. 1 receivers and just totally shutting them down. When you have a guy that can cover a receiver like that, that gives you that extra time you need to get to the quarterback, that gives you that extra time you need to whatever it do on the front seven. … With his play and the numbers he’s putting up as far as interceptions … people aren’t even throwing his way. C’mon.”

Gilmore still has a couple of games to prove why he deserves to be named Defensive Player of the Year.
