Former New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis announced his retirement from the NFL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The one-time Super Bowl was Tom Brady's running mate for a few years in New England, and despite interest from some teams across the NFL, Lewis has called it a career after 10 seasons.
Lewis spent 2020 with the New York Giants and the previous two seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He was searching for another team, and Schefter reported that he had interest from teams just a week ago, so this is a bit of a surprising move.
Last season with the Giants Lewis played in all 16 games but rushed for just 115 yards with a pair of scores, so clearly he fell out of the rotation even with the injury to Saquon Barkley.
The Patriots team that took the field in their preseason debut on Thursday looks vastly different from the team that won the Super Bowl a few years back, and Julain Edelman is another former Patriot to announce his retirement this past offseason as well.
In his time with the Patriots, he was one of their best weapons. Through three seasons next to Tom Brady, Lewis eclipsed 1400 yards rushing and totaled eight scores. In the passing game, he was dynamic and shifty as well and helped the Patriots capture a Super Bowl.
