A lot of pundits lauded the New Orleans Pelicans' decision to give Stan Van Gundy the head coaching reins for their promising young core. While SVG's coaching credentials are solid, retired NBA player Gilbert Arenas made an intriguing case why his signing might be bad for NOLA.

In the latest episode of his No Chill Podcast and relayed by Larry Brown Sports, Agent Zero touched upon the glaring weakness in Van Gundy's leadership. Gilbert Arenas clarified that the 61-year-old tactician is a genuinely nice person but can't connect with his players outside basketball.

“I’m watching how Stan interacts with the guys. Laughing, joking — he’s a nice guy. They had a ticker counting down before practice starts. He’s with the guys, laughing, joking, talking about golf swings. He’s working on his moves. When it hit zero, oh my god, that man turned,” Arenas said.

The 3-time NBA All-Star said SVG is indeed a brilliant basketball mind. However, Gilbert Arenas said Van Gundy doesn't get to know his players.

“Stan’s only problem as a coach was he wasn’t a people’s person. He was a basketball player that understood basketball people. Outside of the gym, there’s no personality,” Gilbert Arenas added.

Gilbert Arenas' assessment of Stan Van Gundy's coaching style may not totally fair considering he only spent one season under him with the Orlando Magic in 2010-11. The once supreme scorer was hobbled by injuries by the time he played for Van Gundy and mostly came off the bench in 49 games.

Gilbert Arenas, however, was already a 10-year vet when he played for Stan. Van Gundy does have a track record of getting scorned by his former players, with the likes of Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard speaking critically of him in the past.
