The New Orleans Pelicans have been avidly listening to phone calls from teams inquiring about Anthony Davis, but general manager Dell Demps is reportedly singled out the Los Angeles Lakers, choosing to not pick up their calls, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe.

According to Woj and Lowe, Demps is following the same blueprint the San Antonio Spurs used last season with Kawhi Leonard, listening to offers, but not quite pulling the trigger, instead playing the long game and waiting until the summer.

“Demps is picking up his phone and returning calls — just not from the Lakers, sources said. From Paul George to Leonard to Davis, the Lakers front office is growing accustomed to icy receptions from teams enduring All-Star trade demands with a full year left on their contracts.”

The Pelicans message is becoming clear from ownership down, as Gayle Benson has been more than happy to play saboteur in this potential partnership between Davis and LeBron James.

“Feel free to join L.A. as a free agent in 2020 — and potentially punt on the 2019-20 season, with LeBron at age 35, to keep the requisite cap space open,” Woj and Lowe wrote.

The Lakers are in a precarious position, as they have already let a season pass by without George and without Davis — misfiring in both attempts by playing the waiting game.

New Orleans is reportedly still upset with Davis' agent, Rich Paul (also James' agent) for making the trade public and attempting to strong-arm the organization into a trade before the Feb. 7 deadline. A gambit they are now willing to make him swallow by playing the waiting game as long as possible.
