The Detroit Pistons have officially announced and confirmed the departure of Troy Weaver as the franchise General Manager. Weaver was released after the team came to an agreement with Trajan Langdon to be their new President of Basketball Operations.

Franchise owner Tom Gores and the team front office released a statement via email. Interestingly, the Pistons stated the decision to move forward without Weaver was a “mutual” decision.

“I very much appreciate all the dedication Troy displayed to our Pistons franchise. As much as we have struggled lately, we will look back and see Troy as an important person in the remaking of the Pistons,” Gores explained. “He took the pain of rebuilding head on and he did the hard work to get us the flexibility we have today. He also assembled a great core of young men with tremendous skill and character to give us a path to the future. Make no mistake, I have real appreciation for who Troy is as a person and what he has meant to the organization. I wish him the very best as he pursues his ventures.”

Troy Weaver's “restoration” plan for the Pistons never took the winning turn the franchise hoped for. Even after putting together a talented young core featuring Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson, the Pistons still only managed a 74-244 record since hiring Weaver in 2020. Last season seemed like the final straw as Detroit finished with a franchise-worst 14-68 record in 2023-24.

Gores also took time to speak on the hiring of Langdon to the front office. Langdon is entering his new role with the Pistons after an impressive leadership resume with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Brooklyn Nets

“I have committed to building a front office in Detroit that brings together the most advanced capabilities and creative basketball minds,” Gores said. “Trajan is an accomplished front office executive with an impressive track record. He’s worked his way up and seen it all as a player, scout, and executive. He’s been successful at every level. I’m confident he will very swiftly get us to the standard of excellence I expect from every business.”
