As he continues to recover from his left knee injury, the Detroit Pistons are planning to take a cautious approach on their starting point guard, Reggie Jackson. Despite training camp starting on Tuesday, they will wait until Saturday before asking him to join their scrimmages, to give him extra time for rest, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press.
“With Detroit Pistons training camp beginning Tuesday, the team will conduct its first scrimmage later in the evening.”
“The team is going to keep playing it cautious until Saturday when the plan is to allow Jackson and his left knee to fully participate in 5-on-5 action.”
When asked to give his thoughts about the team holding him back a few more days, the 27-year-old Boston College product said he is fine with it and understands their decision. He also added that he is looking forward to playing again, as he knows it will help him get his timing and conditioning back.
“It definitely sounds like it's a good, good plan,” the point guard said Tuesday after the morning practice. “Good ramp-up to keep my body intact. We definitely saved the mileage during the summer, so we can't just … get ready to race right now.
“I've definitely been happy with the maintenance and with the program and progressions that we're making, so I look forward to playing Saturday.”
The injury Jackson suffered dates back to last year’s training camp, which forced him to miss a total of 30 games this past season. When healthy, he has proven that he is one of the better playmakers in the league today, and he is hoping that he can put his knee issues in the past. With some key additions made this offseason, the Pistons are looking to make a lot of noise in the Eastern Conference, and will need Jackson at his best to lead them on a return trip to the playoffs.
