The Detroit Pistons reportedly have key plans in store for the upcoming free agency period. Not only have they been linked with Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton, but they are also eyeing the possibility of signing a versatile point guard.

NBA insider Marc Stein noted in his latest Substack newsletter ahead of the 2022 NBA Draft that the Pistons are projected to have $50 million in cap space to not only bring in Ayton but also sign another “top” free agent.

Stein further listed Cleveland Cavaliers' Collin Sexton and Dallas Mavericks' Jalen Brunson as two options on the Pistons’ free agency wish list. However, Brunson is not necessarily a high priority for Detroit, as he added that the fourth-year point guard is “thought” to be behind Sexton.

Brunson is not expected to have a shortage of suitors at the start of this year’s free agency. Stein touched on in a previous Substack column that the New York Knicks are a keen contender to sign the speedy point guard in the coming weeks, although they must clear just enough cap space to afford him.

The Mavericks have been linked with re-signing Brunson, although ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski did recently mention that it could take “nearly a max contract” for Dallas to keep him on the team. A five-year max contract for Brunson could see him be in the line for a deal worth around $175 million.

Brunson bolstered his free agency value in his fourth campaign in Dallas, where he posted career highs in points per game (16.3) and assists per game (4.8). He emerged as a valuable contributor over the team’s run to the Western Conference finals, which included averaging 27.8 points per game in the first-round series victory over the Utah Jazz.

The Pistons are coming off of a season where multiple point guards earned starts for them at the position, including Cory Joseph and Frank Jackson.
