During the early releases of gameplay reveals for Pokemon Legends Arceus, everyone thought it would be an open-world game. In fact, Pokemon Arceus was heavily compared to the like of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This was due to the vast open areas that players could explore as seen in the trailers. Apparently with the new leaks regarding Pokemon Arceus, the game is actually more similar to Monster Hunter Stories

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is now being compared to Monster Hunter Stories because of a hub-based style of gameplay. Just like in Monster Hunter, players take missions in a base camp before departing in another map area. The entire map will have a green outline indicating the division of all the areas.

These missions referred to as  “survey outings” send you to different locations of the ancient Sinnoh region. Also similar to Monster Hunter, players can equip themselves with supplies in the base area.

In terms of the combat system, Pokemon Legends: Arceus also took a page out of Monster Hunter Stories’ book. Pokemon Legends will also be turn-based with a selection between Strong Style attacks and Agile Style attacks. Strong Style is slow but powerful, while Agile Style being fast but weaker.

Some may think it’s disappointing due to expecting a full-blown open-world Pokemon experience similar to Breath of the Wild. This isn’t all too bad though because each area will still be massively huge for players to freely explore. There may be some limitations to visiting other areas, but, it’ll undeniably be a beautiful world to explore. Pokemon Legends: Arceus will release on January 28, 2022, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
