Aside from Aaron Donald, the Los Angeles Rams struggled to get many sacks off of the edge. Thus, the Rams decided to sign Clay Matthews to help provide some veteran help at the outside linebacker.

While speaking to the media, Clay Matthews spoke about taking on a mentor role for team's young pass rushers. The Rams are hoping for guys like Dante Fowler and Samson Ebukam to make a leap forward in 2019.

“Yeah, I feel very much the same as when Julius Peppers came to Green Bay for a few years. I had been there for a few years and was considered the leader at that point, but when you have a guy that’s a future Hall of Famer, you kind of defer to their knowledge and what they’ve been able to do. With Dante and Samson, especially, I’ve been trying to help them out and pick their brains and make sure they pick mine as well and really help them out, so when I’m done, they can continue to progress and move forward and be stud athletes.”

Last season, Los Angeles traded for Fowler from the Jacksonville Jaguars to add a potential star in the making. Although, Fowler never consistently produced on the field with just two sacks in eight games with the Rams.

On the other side, Ebukam showed some improvement in his second season in the NFL in 2018. The former fourth-round pick had three sacks and three forced fumbles last year.

As mentioned before, Los Angeles struggled to create constant pressure off the edge alongside Donald. In detail, the Rams had just six sacks from their outside linebackers in 2018.

Bringing in Matthews will help create more pressure off the edge but he will also bring a veteran presence to the locker room. The young pass rushers for the Rams could be in for a huge year with Matthews helping them improve.
