Although they still sit below .500 on the season, things have been starting to turn around a bit for manager Bruce Bochy and his reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers, who have won two straight games in their East coast series vs the Miami Marlins this weekend. The Rangers are now just a game below the .500 mark and are in second place in the AL West behind only the Seattle Mariners, and Bochy's squad has also received some good news on the injury front as of late, an area where Texas has suffered mightily this year.
“Max Scherzer & Jon Gray (are) both supposed to face hitters on Monday,” reported Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter. Scherzer of course has missed the entirety of this season after undergoing back surgery in December following the Texans' championship run in 2023.
Jon Gray, meanwhile, has missed time with groin tightness sustained in a recent game vs the Philadelphia Phillies.
A positive update
In addition to the Scherzer and Gray updates, the Rangers also got some good news as it pertains to some of the younger members of their pitching core.
“Tyler Mahle will face hitters this week. Kumar Rocker should, too,” reported Grant.
Mahle last year played for the Minnesota Twins and recorded a 3.16 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 28 K's and five walks in his five starts. Rocker, meanwhile, is the Rangers' No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, via RotoBaller staff.
As for Scherzer and Gray, the Rangers could certainly use the services of two of their best pitchers back out there on the mound as they try to work their way back into what figures to be a vaunted AL playoff race this year.
“My check engine light has finally gone off,” joked Scherzer about his recovery, per Grant.
While things have undoubtedly been frustrating so far this year, Rangers fans have shown a solid degree of patience in dealing with the turmoil, especially considering the team's recent championship run as well as the unpredictable nature of injuries.
In any case, the Rangers and Marlins conclude their series on Sunday afternoon.
