Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet understands how good he and his teammates have things with Nick Nurse as their head coach and the front office above him. VanVleet said this when he was asked about the John Beilein situation with the Cleveland Cavaliers and whether it makes him even more appreciative of what the Raptors have built.

VanVleet and the Raptors won the championship last season and look like they are going to go on another deep playoff run this time around as well, with Pascal Siakam replacing Kawhi Leonard as the lead dog:

What Nurse did with the Raptors last season was very rare. A first-year coach taking a team to the Finals and winning it all isn't something you see happen very often.

Now, obviously, Nurse benefited from having Leonard and Danny Green on the roster, two players former Toronto coach Dwane Casey never had the luxury of coaching. But still, Nurse is establishing himself as one of the best coaches in the game. What he's doing with the Raptors this season has been incredible. Frankly, no pundit saw Toronto being this good after Leonard and Green left.

The Raptors open the second half of the season on Friday at home against the Phoenix Suns. Toronto is 40-15, good for second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
