On the eve of the start of the 2017 NFL season, quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains unemployed after parting ways with the San Francisco 49ers.
Apparently, it didn't have to be that way with the Baltimore Ravens showing considerable interest in the controversial quarterback. Retired Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis explained why Kaepernick missed out on an opportunity with Baltimore on Showtime's Inside The NFL, transcription via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
“Then, his girl [Colin Kaepernick’s girlfriend] goes out and put out this racist gesture and doesn’t know we are in the back office about to try to get this guy signed,” Lewis said. “Steve Bisciotti has said it himself, ‘How can you crucify Ray Lewis when Ray Lewis is the one calling for Colin Kaepernick?'”
The “racist gesture” Lewis is referring to is the tweet below from Kaepernick's girlfriend.
With concerns about Joe Flacco's health, who was cleared today for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Ravens had a need for a formidable backup like Kaepernick. This made a lot of sense for the former San Francisco 49ers gunslinger as he also had ties to head coach John Harbaugh.
Jim Harbaugh, former 49ers head coach, is the brother of John and it's possible he may have put in a good word for the unemployed quarterback as well considering his recent comments about the 29-year-old.
Regardless of the missed opportunity in Baltimore, Kaepernick remains without a job and no telling whether another opportunity will present itself in the NFL.
