The Boston Red Sox went from the Wild Card Game to the ALCS last season, making a triumphant return to the postseason after a disappointing 2020 campaign. Unfortunately, one of their best players won't be available right away to help them get back to the doorstep of the World Series.

When addressing reporters at spring training, Chris Sale said that he developed a stress fracture in his rib cage and will not be ready for the start of the season. Boston was hoping their seven-time All-Star would enjoy a full season.

Sale, who started in just nine games last season because of the Tommy John surgery he received in March of 2020, said that he was ready to go prior to his injury. Last season, he posted a 3.16 ERA and 11.0 strikeouts per nine innings across 42.2 total innings.

The Red Sox are still in a good position to compete in the American League East behind stars like Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers. They were still a very good team without Sale, but they lost one of their key pitchers, Eduardo Rodriguez, in free agency. If Sale's injury keeps him out for a while, the team's pitching may suffer greatly. Acquiring Freddie Freeman would be a great addition, though other teams are in pursuit.

With the Tampa Bay Rays still looking strong, the Toronto Blue Jays making big move after big move and the New York Yankees still boasting stars, the Red Sox will have a tough road ahead of them. Sale bouncing back as soon as possible is key to their success.
