In desperate need of bullpen help, the Boston Red Sox have discussed a trade with the New York Mets that would land them relief pitcher Edwin Diaz, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB Network.

Buster Olney of ESPN adds that the Red Sox could include third base prospect Bobby Dalbec or corner infield prospect Triston Casas in a potentail deal for Diaz. Olney also notes that Boston is “confident” it will make an “impact bullpen move.”

The Mets acquired Diaz in an offseason trade with the Seattle Mariners with the hope he would solidify the back end of their bullpen. Instead, Diaz has been a major disappointment, pitching to the tune of a 4.95 ERA while allowing 45 hits and striking out 61 batters over 40 innings of work.

The 25-year-old was originally selected by the Mariners in the third round of the 2012 MLB Draft and went on to make his big-league debut in 2016, appearing in 49 games out of Seattle's bullpen and registering a 2.79 ERA while fanning 88 hitters across 51 2/3 frames of action.

Then, the following year, Diaz continued to impress, making 66 appearances and totaling 34 saves while recording a 3.27 ERA, logging 89 strikeouts through 66 innings.

He then had his breakout season in 2018, posting a league-best 57 saves and tallying a minuscule 1.96 ERA while accumulating 124 punchouts over 73 1/3 frames en route to an All-Star appearance.

But, obviously, Diaz has come nowhere close to that production in New York, so perhaps a change of scenery could do him some good.

The Red Sox currently own a record of 60-48 and are right in the thick of the American League Wild Card race.
