Adrian Peterson has continued to defy the odds at the running back position and he hopes to continue leaving his mark in NFL record books. As he prepares to enter his third season with the Washington Redskins, Peterson wants to surpass Barry Sanders on the all-time rushing list.

“That’s definitely one of the goals, passing Barry Sanders would definitely be one of the highlights of my career. What he accomplished, and how I’ve looked up to him, I’ve always wanted to say I did something better than Barry Sanders,” Peterson said on NFL Network.

Heading into the 2020 NFL season, Peterson currently sits at No. 5 on the all-time rushing list with 14,216 yards. On the other hand, Sanders remains ahead of him at No. 4 with 15,269 yards. By doing the math, Peterson needs 1,054 yards this upcoming season to surpass Sanders.

While Peterson has shown he can still be effective, it's hard to envision him exceeding 1,054 rushing yards next season. The All-Pro running back hasn't recorded a season of over 1,054 yards since 2015 with the Minnesota Vikings. Not to mention, the Redskins are going to have plenty of running backs involved in their offense in 2020.

Throughout the offseason, Washington has added Peyton Barber, J.D. McKissic, and rookie Antonio Gibson. Also, Derrius Guice and Bryce Love remain on the roster despite dealing with knee injuries in 2019.

Even with Washington's crowded backfield, Peterson isn't prepared to hand over the starting job. It remains to be seen if he even has a choice in the matter. But if Peterson can remain healthy, he should be able to achieve his dream of surpassing Sanders in the next couple of seasons.
