The Washington Redskins traded for Alex Smith in the 2018 offseason – hoping to have finally secured a quarterback that could get them to the playoffs regularly.

Things started off well, with the Redskins jumping out to a 6-3 start. However, Smith gruesomely broke his leg then, and the season was derailed. Washington ended up with a 7-9 record.

Even worse, not only did Smith miss all that time in 2018, he's definitely out for all of 2019. After that the future is uncertain.

Due to that, many people were speculative on how much Smith would be around this season. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, he's making his presence known – in a great way.

The Redskins learned from their mistake last season, and definitely aren't short on depth in 2019 at quarterback. They currently have three players fighting for the starting spot – and you'd have to wonder the two that don't get the spot will still be on the roster at the start of the year.

The three quarterbacks are rookie Dwayne Haskins, and veterans Case Keenum and Colt McCoy. Smith's ready to teach.

Keenum and McCoy have both been around for a long time, but that doesn't mean they can't learn. For Haskins, I just have two words for you – Patrick Mahomes. Smith was Mahomes' mentor for the Kansas City Chiefs his rookie year and that worked out swimmingly. It should be noted that Smith was praised for his mentorship of Mahomes, it was no coincidence that he excelled afterward.

According to the article, Smith has been to every quarterback meeting. He appears ready to take Haskins under his wing and teach him everything he knows. That might mean if Smith does ever return he won't have a starting job in Washington – but he's just that kind of teammate.

Mark it down now – Alex Smith will have a long and successful career as a coach if he ever decides to take that route. For now, Dwayne Haskins and the rest of the Washington Redskins quarterbacks are getting his advice without that coaching tag.
