It took a hefty price, but the Washington Redskins finally have a quarterback they felt comfortable committing to with Alex Smith. However, DJ Swearinger was not too pleased about what the Redskins gave up in the trade to get Smith. The Redskins safety took to Twitter to voice his outrage over fellow defensive back Kendall Fuller’s inclusion in the deal.

Fuller, 22, had a breakout season for the Redskins in just his second year in the league. He was ranked as the top slot corner in the league by NFL1000 Scouts, and he was also the No. 6-ranked corner overall according to Pro Football Focus. He was the best player on a Redskins secondary that was a driving force in the team having one of the best pass defenses in the NFL this season.

While it was understandable for the Redskins to go and lock up the quarterback position since they apparently weren’t ready to give in to Kirk Cousins’ salary demands, surrendering a promising young cornerback like Fuller was a high price to pay. It must be especially tough for a defensive captain in Swearinger, who finally saw significant improvement in 2017 in large part due to Fuller, only to see him shipped off.

But the Redskins front office obviously felt that finding a replacement slot corner was easier to do than a competent quarterback. They’ll now have to go and prove it in the coming years by getting someone who can maintain the defense's strong performance even without the elite-level play that Fuller could've provided.
