The Washington Football Team was considered one of the favorites to sign quarterback Cam Newton for quite some time. However, that never happened, and instead Newton signed with the New England Patriots. With new head coach Ron Rivera bringing in so many other names from the Carolina Panthers, many thought it was just a matter of time. So why didn't it happen? Well, Rivera went on “The Dan Patrick Show.” And while on there, he gave his reasoning – it's because of Dwayne Haskins.

“I’m going to be very honest, that’s why I didn’t jump out and try to get Cam signed right away,” Rivera said on The Dan Patrick Show. “Cause I have to watch Dwayne and see where he is. I can’t stunt his growth. We’ve got to give him the opportunity to show us what he can or can’t do.”

Many fans were disappointed with the first-round pick's 2019 rookie season. However, it's hard to deny that he showed massive improvements over the final few weeks of the season.

And there is a ridiculous amount of potential in the young quarterback. So Rivera is definitely right in that sense. Washington would be stupid to not give the sophomore a more serious look.

Especially considering they are under new management — management who has yet to see Haskins in a game.

Newton is still a very good quarterback, and was a great addition to the Patriots. However, Washington is not a Super Bowl contender right now.

So bringing Newton in would not have done much for the team. Simply put, let Haskins grow. Maybe he can flourish into a true superstar franchise QB. And if that happens, Washington will be knocking on the door of legitimate contention.
