The Washington Redskins suffered their most severe loss of the 2018 NFL season with the gruesome leg injury to quarterback Alex Smith. It seems free agent quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Mark Sanchez are among the options at the top of their wish list.

With Smith out, Washington will need to find a new backup now that quarterback Colt McCoy is the starter. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, they plan on hosting a workout for Manuel, Sanchez, and TJ Yates:

Redskins are bringing in a group of QBs to work out on Monday, including EJ Manuel, TJ Yates and Mark Sanchez, per sources. Washington needs a new backup for starting QB Colt McCoy.

There is no question that this is not the most impressive crop of quarterbacks to choose from. Unfortunately, there are not very many options out there at this point in the season. If all goes well, the player they chose will never have to take a snap for the rest of the season. However, it is still crucial to find the best backup possible in case things take a turn for the worst. Judging by Washington's season thus far, it is very well in the realm of possibilities.

It is no secret that they have been plagued by injury throughout the course of the 2018 campaign. Despite their depleted roster, they still managed to sit atop the lackluster NFC East. However, Smith's devastating injury deals a serious blow to their chances at maintaining a lead for the rest of the year.
