Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed and running back Adrian Peterson are pegged as front-runners to be cap casualties this offseason. However, it appears the Redskins are still doing their due diligence.

Head coach Ron Rivera has wasted no time cutting the loose ends on his roster. According to Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com, Rivera says they are still debating whether to usher in a full-blown youth movement, which would mean discarding Jordan Reed and Adrian Peterson:

“We’re evaluating all of our options,” Rivera said. “We have a good young group of guys, and we’re just looking at things and deciding whether or not we want to go that way, continue to get younger — or, do we have to sit there and sprinkle in some veteran guys?”

Washington has already parted ways with a couple of notable veterans in cornerback Josh Norman and wide receiver Paul Richardson this offseason. Regardless, Rivera's comments make it clear that nothing is set in tone just yet as far as personnel goes, including Jordan Reed.

Of course, the prospect of the team cutting ties with Jordan Reed is hardly far-fetched. He missed the entire 2019 campaign while suffering from concussions symptoms and his track record with head injuries makes it hard to determine whether or not he will be good to go by the time the 2020 NFL season rolls around. They can clear up $8.5 million in cap space if they release him this offseason.

Peterson is entering the final year of his current deal and Washington will have the option to keep him around. The veteran has served as a stabilizing factor in the backfield, however, it remains to be seen just how adamant they are about securing more cap room, with Jordan Reed a part of the picture.
