The Washington Redskins have not wasted any time in cutting the loose ends from their roster this offseason. However, it appears they have opted to keep a familiar face around in running back Adrian Peterson.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Washington will exercise their club option for the 2020 NFL season:

Washington has ushered in some significant changes with the arrival of head coach Ron Rivera. They have since parted ways with notable players such as cornerback Josh Norman and wide receiver Paul Richardson in an effort to both shore up cap space and rejuvenate the locker room following their recent struggles.

Peterson had been struggling to find bis footing as a veteran running back in the league until he signed a one-year deal with the Redskins prior to the 2018 campaign. It became evident early on that he still had plenty of gas left in the tank and etched out an integral role for himself in this injury-riddled backfield. His presence undoubtedly served as a stabilizing factor in the offense and they decided to sign him to a two-year deal.

Washington's decision to keep Peterson around is a strong indication that they are still uncertain about running back Derrius Guice's health for next season. Despite the promise he has shown as a future workhorse back, he has been plagued by knee injuries so far in his young career.

As a result, it seems Peterson will continue to serve as their contingency plan until Guice is able to work his way back to 100% once again.
