The Washington Redskins are expected to place a franchise tag on right guard Brandon Scherff, according to Jenna Laine of ESPN.com.

Scherff was set to become the best offensive lineman on the open market this month, but barring a trade, it's looking like Scherff will be spending his 2020 season with the Redskins.

Washington has until March 12 to decide whether or not it will use the tag.

Elbow and shoulder injuries limited Scherff to just 11 games in 2019, but when he was on the field, he was terrific, making his third Pro Bowl appearance.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Iowa, was originally selected by the Redskins with the fifth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He was immediately named Washington's starting right guard during his rookie campaign, and he did not miss a game. The following year, Scherff once again appeared in every contest and proceeded to earn his first Pro Bowl selection.

Since then, however, Scherff has not played a full season.

He notched his second trip to the Pro Bowl in 2017, but he missed a couple of games that year. Then, in 2018, Scherff played in just eight games before hitting the injured reserve list as a result of a torn pectoral muscle.

There is no doubting Scherff's talent when he is healthy, but his checkered injury history may give the Redskins some pause when it comes time to discuss a long-term deal.

Washington went just 3-13 this past season and owns the second overall pick in the draft this April.
