On Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Washington football team would temporarily be re-named…the Washington Football Team—at least for the time being.

In the mean time, the team will largely retain its burgundy and gold color scheme while removing all old logos and references to the former name.

The interim name change went into effect on Friday, but the changes weren't immediately reflected everywhere.

For hours after the change was announced and the team's official Twitter account was renamed, neither the NFL's website nor the Washington Football Team's 2020 opponents' schedules initially updated their pages. This was puzzling, considering that when “word first emerged of an imminent plan to ditch the name of the Washington football team, it was accompanied with a report that other teams had been told to prepare to scrub the old name from their websites,” according to Pro Football Talk.

That has since been fixed. Now, users on NFL.com will see the Washington Football Team alongside its temporary “W” logo. As PFT notes, URLs for the team's website will still need to be edited, though the website overall has largely been updated to reflect the changes.

On Thursday, ESPN reported that the team aims to scrub all digital and physical references to the former nickname within the next 50 days.

Washington VP and chief marketing officer Terry Bateman told ESPN the long-term rebrand will include fans, sponsors, players and alumni. “You're doing a rebranding process that correctly takes 12 to 18 months. If you want to do it right, you have to take a deep breath, take a step back and go through the process,” he said.
