Former Louisiana Tech coach Tim Rattay is returning to the NFL as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Redskins, according to a new report.

Rattay has been coaching at Louisiana Tech for the past six seasons.

NBC Sports has the scoop:

“The Redskins put one of the final pieces in place for the 2019 coaching staff by hiring Tim Rattay as their new quarterbacks coach. The Redskins interviewed multiple candidates for the QB coach spot before deciding on Rattay. He will have his hands full replacing Kevin OConnell as Skins QB coach. Alex Smith is not expected to play in 2019 after suffering a compound fracture in his leg in November and suffering setbacks and infections in his recovery.”

He also played football, briefly, where he served as the quarterback for the Buccaneers while Washington head coach Jay Gruden was on Tampa’s staff. During his time with the Bucs, Ike Hilliard was the wide receivers coach.

He was drafted into the NFL in 2000, in the seventh round of the draft, by the San Francisco 49ers.

But Rattay is known for another reason: he was almost drafted as a quarterback for the New England Patriots.

Bill Belichick recalls that, at the time Rattay was being considered for the lineup, he was also considering another up-and-coming quarterback: Tom Brady.

Belichick, as we know, ultimately went with Brady over Rattay, and that choice led to the Patriots going to the Super Bowl eleven times and taking home six rings. So, Belichick definitely made the right choice in that case.
