The Washington Redskins were expected to insert Josh Doctson as the team's go-to option in the passing game this year. In a turn of events, Washington may try to trade Doctson ahead of Week 1 of the regular season.

The Redskins selected Doctson with the 22nd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of TCU. Coming into the NFL, the 6-foot-2 wideout was presumed to be an up-and-coming star at the receiver position.

After three seasons with the Redskins, it's safe to say his career has gotten off to the start that was envisioned in 2016. Doctson is coming off of a season where he had 44 receptions, 532 yards, and two touchdowns for the team.

Surprisingly, the 26-year old wide receiver led all receivers on the team in receiving yards in 2018. Now, entering 2019, his spot on the roster is hanging in the balance.

Over the past few seasons, the writing has been on the wall for the Redskins to part ways with Doctson. The team has drafted Trey Quinn, Terry McLaurin, and Kelvin Harmon to provide a boost at the position. Along with their draft choices, the team also signed Paul Richardson before the 2018 season to a five-year deal.

The cherry on top is that the Redskins declined to pick up Doctson's fifth-year option this offseason; essentially making him a free agent at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Jay Gruden has already announced that Quinn will start alongside Richardson to begin the season. With all of that being said, Doctson's tenure with Washington may be coming to an abrupt end very soon.
