Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has once again proven his unconventional approach to the game by hiring a former professional sports gambler as the newest member of the Mavs' front office.

As detailed by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe, the Mavs have hired Bob Voulgaris as the team's director of quantitative research and development. Apparently, Voulgaris' unparalleled success in the sports gambling ring has earned him major points in Cuban's book.

For years, Voulgaris made a living betting on NBA games, successfully wagering based on his research and information. Voulgaris is known for his deep analytics and expertise on coaching strategy and tendencies of individual referees.

The report's description of Voulgaris' function is a bit vague and does not definitively explain how his expertise will help the Mavs in achieving its objectives.

In part, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is expected to utilize Voulgaris as a strategic thinker who will help examine on-court strategy in big-picture ways.

To be fair, this does seem like a well-calculated move on the part of Cuban and the Mavs. Although unconventional and definitely out of the box, it actually makes a lot of sense. Voulgaris is not your run-of-the-mill street bookie, and he certainly has a deep understanding of the game. Surely, his unique skill set will prove beneficial for the Mavs, in one way or another.
