The Rockies are looking to build a contender. Following their confusing move of inking Kris Bryant to a massive 7-year deal, Colorado followed it up by extending Ryan McMahon to the tune of a 6-year, $70 million dollar extension, per John Heyman. One interesting note about the deal is that McMahon can opt out of the contract in year four if he finishes within the top five in MVP voting in any of the first three seasons.

The 27-year old versatile infielder has spent time at third base, second base, and first base during his big league career. Although he has never posted anything close to an MVP caliber season, he has been one of the more talented and underrated players in the game over the past few years.

McMahon blasted 23 home runs in 2021 and 24 in 2019. He hit over .250 in each of those seasons while posting a .779 OPS in both years as well. He also hit 32 doubles in 2021.

McMahon hits the ball hard and has the advantage of playing in the thin air of Colorado. He is a player with All-Star potential moving forward. At just 27 years old and hitting in a lineup that features a star such as Bryant, Ryan McMahon could be in store for his best performance yet.

There are many people around the ball world who have been perplexed as to what the Rockies’ current organizational strategy is. They are coming off of a losing season and traded Nolan Arenado last year and recently watched Trevor Story sign in Boston with the Red Sox. And yet, they still signed Kris Bryant and locked up McMahon with hopes of contending in the difficult to navigate NL West.

But it is good to see them not rolling over and at least making an effort to make some form of noise in the NL West. McMahon will look to reward Colorado in 2022 for their generous extension.
