The New Orleans Saints were handed a bit of bad news on Tuesday with it being announced that Mark Ingram was suspended four games for using PEDs.
The good news for the Saints is that there probably isn't a team better equipped to lose a running back like Ingram because they still have Alvin Kamara who was already ready to take on a bigger role this year.
According to ESPN's Mike Triplett, Ingram hasn't been around the team for offseason workouts and isn't expected to be around for OTA's so there already appears to be some sort of discourse between him and the team. The rumors were swirling earlier this year that the Saints would try to trade him as he enters the final year of his contract, but with a four-game suspension looming that might make that task a bit more difficult.
Kamara is the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year and was one of the biggest surprises in all of the NFL. He finished the season with 826 receiving yards, 728 rushing yards, and 14 touchdowns. He also had an unbelievable 6.1 yards per carry.
All the signs sure seem to be pointing to Ingram not having a huge role when he comes back from suspension, especially if Kamara starts out the season strong.
The only big question for the Saints is the depth behind Kamara. Sixth-round pick Boston Scott, second-year player Trey Edmunds and third-year pro Jonathan Williams round out the running back position and one of those guys is going to have to step up as the backup.
