The long standing battle for the starting quarterback gig with the New Orleans Saints has finally reached its conclusion. It will be Jameis Winston starting Week 1 for New Orleans against the Green Bay Packers.

Saints

Winston beats out Hill who the Saints will now be able to plug back into their offense as an effective gadget player who can bounce around to multiple positions.

The Saints will be without star wide receiver Michael Thomas to start the year and the weapons on offense with Hill at quarterback instead of everywhere else would've been another hit to the core. It's unknown if this factored in to head coach Sean Payton's decision at all but if it did, it's not surprising.

Winston came over from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 to be the backup to Drew Brees after the former No. 1 overall pick just didn't pan out the way the Bucs expected him to. Winston checking his ego at the door and accepting his role with the Saints then has paid off a year later with him being named the starter now.

While starting with the Packers will be no easy task for Winston and New Orleans, the schedule eases up a bit after that. The Saints will play the Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots and New York Giants in order after Week 1. All three had losing records a year ago and figure to be middling teams again this year.

Here's to hoping Winston taking advantage of his second opportunity with the Saints and runs with it after earning the starting quarterback gig!
