If NFL teams are looking for a backup quarterback next season, they will not have one option on the table anymore. Professional journeyman Luke McCown has decided he is done with the NFL as he officially announced it through his agent.

Mike McCartney sent out a statement on Friday with the news:

Luke was a fourth-round pick out of Louisiana Tech for the Cleveland Brown back in 2004. He started four games his rookie season but failed to record a single win. Over the course of the next 12 seasons, he would start just six more time—three times for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007, two with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011, and one with the Saints in 2015.

He spent some time with the Dallas Cowboys last season but did not make the final roster. No one else picked him up in 2017. So, after sitting out for a year, he decided to call it a career.

While he never played much and will certainly not come up in Hall of Fame talks in five years, he got the chance to do what millions of guys would love to do. He was paid very well to be the guy no one ever wanted to see play (the backup quarterback).

In 13 seasons, he made just over $17 million. Most quarterbacks will make that in a single season, but it sure beats working a regular job.

Luke is 36, but his older brother Josh (38-years old) is in line to start for the New York Jets again next year.
