The New Orleans Saints are hoping to get back into the playoffs this season but they were dealt a pretty unfortunate injury blow ahead of training camp. Star defensive end Marcus Davenport reportedly underwent surgery to repair a horrific-sounding finger injury. According to Mike Triplett, Davenport revealed that he had the top portion of his pinky finger removed in a procedure this offseason.

Davenport had surgery on the finger to repair it last season, but he claims to have broken a plate that was inserted in the finger, causing him to require another surgery. Unfortunately, it seems that surgery entailed him having a bit of his left pinky amputated, in what sounds like an entirely unpleasant ordeal for the 25-year-old.

Davenport said that the plate in his finger was causing a recurring infection in his pinky, which is what resulted in the rather extreme procedure.

He first picked up the finger injury back in college and it seems that last season's surgery didn't fully fix the issue. In addition to removing part of his pinky finger, Davenport also underwent shoulder surgery this offseason. It's unclear when he'll return to action for the Saints, but he's certainly endured a brutal offseason away from the team.

Last year, Davenport featured in 11 games for the Saints, racking up 9.0 sacks, three forced fumbles, 39 tackles, and 16 QB hits. The former first-round pick from the 2018 NFL Drat is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract and is due to make just under $2 million in 2022.
