The New Orleans Saints have claimed cornerback Janoris Jenkins off waivers, according to Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Pelissero notes that the claim will be deferred until Tuesday because the Saints play on Monday night.

Jenkins was waived by the New York Giants late last week after a Twitter exchange in which he called a fan a “retard.” Jenkins apologized for the incident, but that did not stop the Giants from cutting ties with the defensive back.

All things considered, New York's decision to part ways with Jenkins seems to have worked out well for the veteran, as he left a 3-11 team and will be joining a New Orleans club that is 10-3 and considered by many to be a Super Bowl contender.

In the 13 games he played with the Giants this season, Jenkins logged 54 tackles, four interceptions and 14 passes defended.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at both the University of Florida and North Alabama, was originally selected by the St. Louis Rams in the second round (39th pick overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Rams, posting solid results. Jenkins then signed a lucrative five-year deal with the Giants in March 2016, and that ensuing season, Jenkins had a breakout campaign of sorts, registering 49 tackles, a sack, three picks, a forced fumble and 18 passes defended, making his first (and currently only) Pro Bowl appearance.

However, since then, Jenkins' play has declined, so it remains to be seen how much he actually helps the Saints.
