The New Orleans Saints just lost a key part of their offense after running back Mark Ingram was hit with a four-game suspension for violation of the league’s PED policy. But despite that significant blow, the Saints do not intend to sign a veteran running back to take Ingram’s place on the roster while he's suspended, Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports.

DeMarco Murray is one such free-agent veteran running back who has been linked with the Saints as a possible short-term replacement for Ingram.

Instead of turning to a veteran running back like Murray, the Saints appear confident that their other running backs currently on the roster can do a capable enough job of backing up Alvin Kamara while Ingram is out. That group includes Zach Line, Daniel Lasco, Jonathan Williams, Trey Edmunds, and sixth-round pick Boston Scott. Those five have a total of 227 career rushing yards between them.

Ingram is coming off a career year in 2017. He rushed for 1,124 yards with 12 rushing touchdowns and also had 58 catches for 416 receiving yards — all new career-highs. He also had 230 carries, which was almost twice as many as the next-closest Saint.

But he was only one half of the team’s terrific running back platoon. Kamara came from nowhere to deliver an outstanding rookie season. He had 728 rushing yards, 826 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns as he was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. Kamara now stands to take on a more significant workload with Ingram missing for the first quarter of the season.
