New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees have been successful together for a long time, and it shows in the results.

After the Saints' ugly 12-9 win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night, Payton and Brees moved into second place on the all-time coach/quarterback duo wins list with 117 wins, passing the legendary Miami Dolphins combination of Don Shula and Dan Marino.

I'm sure you know who is in first place, but for the sake of those who have no idea, the answer is New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, who have won 205 games together.

While Payton and Brees certainly won't be catching those two, what they have done is still an incredible accomplishment.

What's odd is the way Payton and Brees won their record-breaking game, as it was not in typical Saints fashion. After all, how often do you see New Orleans win games with its defense?

Brees was actually somewhat frustrated with the offensive performance, but he, of course, appreciates that the ballclub found a way to win regardless, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com:

“I'd say for us offensively, walking off the field just a little while ago, I just felt like, ‘Man, there was tons of opportunities out there.' We killed ourselves on a few drives with just some stupid penalties,” Brees said. “I felt like there were some missed opportunities. But bottom line is you make the plays at the end of the game to win the game. And that's what we did — defensively, absolutely.”

At the ripe age of 39, Brees is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league. This season, he has thrown for 3,666 yards, 31 touchdowns and five interceptions while leading the league with a completion percentage of 74.9 percent.
